Mrs. Gimmestad buried at Belview
Funeral services were held Monday at Welander-Quist funeral home in Edina for Mrs. Bernard Gimmestad, 76, former Belview resident who died shortly after midnight May 30 of massive lung congestion. She had three operations for cancer last year.
Rev. William Snyder of St John's Lutheran church conducted the service. An afternoon service was held at Grace Lutheran church in Belview with Rev. Richard Erickson officiating. Mrs. Joy Berg sang and Mrs. Lloyd Anderson was organist. Pallbearers were her brothers, Sverre Omtvedt of Alexandria, Trygve of Minneapolis, Harry of Redwood Falls and Rolf of Fort Collins, Co; and Alfred and Walter Gimmestad. Interment was in the Belview cemetery.
Agnes Omtvedt was born August 20, 1897 in Telemarken, Norway, a daughter of Simon and Ingrid Omtvedt. At the age of 11, she came to Minnesota and made her home with relatives in Duluth. She graduated from Central High school there and was employed by Hormel company before moving to Belview in 1919.
There she was a bookkeeper for the H.O. and Knute Hegdal firms and the State bank. She married Bernard Gimmestad June 21, 1922 and they lived in Madison, Lester Prairie, Brewster and Dawson while her husband was a school administrator from 1922-37.
He purchased the Dawson Sentinel and for 27 hears she helped him operate the newspaper, working as bookkeeper, reporter, Linotype and press operator and in other phases of the business. She was also a member of the Riverside and Grace Lutheran ladies aid, Dawson study club, American Legion auxiliary, and Order of Eastern Star in which she served as matron. After selling the newspaper, they retired and remained in Dawson until about three years ago when they moved to Minneapolis. The night before her death, she made final preparations for moving into their new home at Old Fort Snelling.
Survivors include her husband at F-2 Officers Quarters, Fort Snelling 55111; daughters, Mrs. J.M. (Patricia) Wadleigh of Berkeley, Ca, Dorothy of Minneapolis, publicity and public relations director for the Minnesota Historical society; and Nancy, a professor of English at University of Wisconsin; grandchildren, Leif and Meta Wadleigh and Terri and Gary Gimmestad; brothers, Robert of Seattle, Sverre, Trygve, Harry and Rolf, and sisters, Mrs. John (Aagot) Peterson and Mrs. Loren (Thelma) Engel of Belview. She was preceded in death by a sister, Esther.
