John was the first born son of Rev. Ulrich Keener. His middle name is SOULE after the preacher who ordained his Father. He himself became a minister.

He served with Co B 65th NC INF CSA as a Sergeant in the Civil War. He and Ad (Harriet Admonia Hayes) had 8 Children.

He died in 1880 on the day before the census taker came around and left a small son who someone thought might be named William.. It wasn't, it was Daniel Atkins Keener only weeks old.
