In WWII General Walter Krueger's Sixth Army, consisting of I and XIV Corps, landed in Lingayen Gulf, Luzon island in the Philippines, on 9 January 1945.
The 543d Engineer Boat and Shore Regiment, was part of the 6th Infantry Division (the "Sightseeing Sixth"), XIV Corp.
This amphibious invasion led to the liberation of Manila in February 1945.
