Dude a mixed-breed hound died when he was killed by a bear.
Dude's owner Jason Schindler said, "I was amazed after I sat and thought about it how close I was to dying there. That dog saved my life.
Dude, Schindler's 8-year-old hound dog mutt gave his life to save his owner. It happened in an area where Dude loved to run.
"I came outside on the deck and as soon as I got outside I could hear him yipping and yelping," said Schindler.
"As I was leaning over to kind-of grab him the bear lunged right for me and it was just a split second, all I saw was a big black thing coming directly at me. And if it wasn't for the dog standing there and jumping in front of the bear, the bear would have mauled me, I'm pretty confident of that," said Schindler.
"I seen that the dog is still breathing and the dog is looking up at me like 'Thank God you're here', you know. So I grabbed him out of there and we rushed him to the Sparta, Wis. veterinary clinic, but he died about 3-and-a-half-hours later," Schindler said.
The attack was heart-breaking for Schindler and his 4-year-old daughter Emily.
"He's in heaven, he's in heaven. He'll be watching for us when we come home at night," said Schindler.
Eight years ago, Schindler saved the young mutt's life by adopting him from a shelter; he never expected Dude would return the favor.
"He's my best friend and I felt like that the last couple days that I lost one of my best friends, and that's tough," said Schindler.
Wisconsin's Department of Natural Resources estimated the bear was at least 300 pounds. Dude weighed less than 50.
