Russell James Beers, 56, died unexpectedly while vacationing at Woman Lake near Hackensack, Minnesota. Born at David City, Nebraska, Russell was the son of Frank Russell and Margaret (Grimison) Beers. He received a bachelor of science degree in 1933 and his master's degree in 1935, both from the University of Nebraska and his PhD in bacteriology from the University of Illinois in 1956.
An instructor at the University of Wisconsin from 1941-1945, he became a chemist with the Badger Ordinance works in 1945 and served as assistant director of the suture laboratory, Iowa Chemicals and Mfg. Co. from 1945-46. He was an instructor and assistant professor at Kansas State University, Manhattan, from 1946-195?

He married Thelma Sneed on Dec. 27, 1950.

Mr. Beers came to Iowa State University as an assistant professor in 1957, became an associate professor in 1961, He served as faculty advisor to undergraduate students in bacteriology for the past ten years.
