Thomas was the son of Thomas Sr. and Clarkey (Williamson) Maxwell.
He married Rhoda Hodges on March 6, 1936 in Knox County, Illinois.
They were the parents of eleven children.
For a number of years they lived in Knox County, Illinois but in 1848 they moved to Red Oak grove four miles west of Bishop Hill, located in Henry County, Illinois where they lived for many years.
They later moved to Missouri and also spent some time in Texas.
In 1879, they again returned to Illinois and bought a small farm near Old Henderson, near their early home in Knox County.
While crossing the railroad tracks, Thomas was struck and killed by a passing train.
