Celebration of life memorial services will be held on Monday, June 26, 2017 at 10:30 a.m. at the Nishna Valley Funeral & Cremation Service. The family will greet relatives and friends with visitation from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Memorials in Judy's name are being directed to Essex Fire & Rescue, St. Jude's Children's Hospital or the Wounded Warriors Project. Inurnment will be in the Essex Cemetery. Following the graveside, everyone is invited to join the family at the Shenandoah Eagles Club.

Judy Maxine Powers, one of six children of Orville and Maxine (White) Bain, was born on January 1, 1947 in Shenandoah, Iowa. She grew up near Farragut, Iowa, where she attended the Farragut Community Schools with the Class of 1965. Throughout the years, Judy worked many jobs in the area; Sack & Save, Corner Mart, Iowa Liquor Store, Kum & Go, the Derby and later on at ABC Staff with the State of Iowa. She received her Medication Manager Certificate from Iowa Western Community College and worked as an Assisted Living Attendant at Elm Heights Care Center in Shenandoah until her retirement.

Judy was a member of the Eagles Club #3849 of Shenandoah. Among her many enjoyments were gardening, Facebooking with her friends and family, bowling, and going to casinos with her good friend Rich Hembry. Judy had much compassion and made time caring for others’ needs. She was a wonderful daughter, sister, mom, grandma and a good friend to all who knew her. Spending time with her family brought much love and joy to her life.

Surrounded by her family, Judy peacefully passed away on June 21, 2017 at her Essex, Iowa home, at the age of 70 years, 5 months, and 20 days. She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Chester White and Mr. and Mrs. Frank Bain; her parents, Orville and Maxine Bain; son-in-law Jim Royer; brother, Rex Bain; niece, Trudy (Williams) Sorensen; nephew, Jeff Bain; and brother-in-law, Raymond Welchans.

Survivors include her children, Dennis (Karen) Durfey of Whitebourne, Newfoundland, Annette Verge of Botwood, Newfoundland, Rhonda (Kent) Smith of Cherokee, IA, Lisa (Jason) Nelson of Essex, and Trisa Powers of Shenandoah; fourteen grandchildren, Jamie Verge of Newfoundland, Kenneth Durfey of Newfoundland, Johnathon Racine of Chicago, IL, Kodie Powers of Shenandoah, Phillip Verge of Newfoundland, Jesselyn Racine of Imogene, IA, Kayla Durfey of Newfoundland, Tyler Burns of Essex, Aaron Burns of Des Moines, IA, Shyanne Huffman of Shenandoah, Regan Burns of Essex, Josie and Jenna Nelson of Essex and Kenda Smith of Cherokee; nine great grandchildren; siblings, Max (Maeann) Bain, Zoanna Welchans, David Bain, and Paula Durst; nieces and nephews; special friend, Rich Hembry; and many friends.
