S/O Theophilus and Phebe (Hulbert) Ames. Theophilus, Phebe and a "child" all died within a few days of typhoid fever in the spring of 1864. The Defiance County, Ohio Cemetery Index (under the alphabetical listing of AMES) has Theophilus, Phebe and an "Infant Ames" all buried in the same location, however the tombstone located in Lost Creek Cemetery only has Theophilus and Phebe's names on it. The sexton said that it wasn't unusual to bury people (especially a young child) without a name, during an epidemic time period.

Theophilus and Phebe had 5 children; James, Orville Wilbur, Mary C, Oliver Leonard and Charles Theophilus. After the deaths of the three family members in the spring of 1864, Jared Hulbert (the father of Phebe) was awarded guardianship of the four remaining children. They are listed as James, Wilbur, Mary and Charles on that document. Therefore the child that died of typhoid fever, along with the parents, would have been Oliver Leonard.
