Per the 1850, District 65, Wood Co., Virginia Census, Elizabeth (27), Daniel (7) and Amos (5),they are residing with Uz & Mary Hoy, (both 52 yrs) and their children, Reason (15), James (17), Eleanor (14) & Elijah (10). (Due to her husband's death in 1848)

Per the July 31, 1860 Wood Co., WV Census, Daniel Hoy (17 yrs, single, b: 1843, PA) is residing with his mother, Elizabeth (38 yrs, b: 1822, PA) and her new husband, Wm Bailey (50 yrs, b: 1810, VA) and their children, Albert S. Bailey, (1 yrs, b: Nov.5, 1858, VA d; Feb. 1880, Wood Co, WV of measles @ Age 22 yrs.) and Margaret Ann Bailey, (6 mos, born Feb. 1, 1860. VA).

NOTE: Most of the information on Daniel Hoy and his wife, was provided by Glenn Hoy, a great grandson and Loretta Fern Hoy Tacy, a granddaughter. Glenn Hoy (121-113-5) has provided documentation in the form of census reports, descriptions in a local county history and other sources. Loretta Tacy (121-181) has extended many of these lines to the present. The following comments are abstracted from a family description beginning on page 316 of "The Capitol City and Lancaster County, Nebraska" and Civil War Pension Records.

Daniel Hoy Story

"Daniel Hoy, farming section 31, Grant Precinct was born in Pennsylvania in March 1843, the son of William and Elizabeth Cowell Hoy, natives of Pennsylvania. The father, a farmer, moved to West Virginia and located in Wood County, where he died in 1848. The mother died in 1900.

Daniel was reared and educated in Virginia, now W.Va. He enlisted in Company D, 14th Regiment, WV Infantry. Vol. Inf. as a private. He served two years and 10 months which coincides with the close of the war. This regiment fought in several battles and skirmishes in the northern and western areas of Virginia. The most well known are those of Cloyd's Mountain, Kernstown, Opequan Creek and Cedar Creek. Sometime during the war, Daniel contracted typhoid pnemonia and was hospitalized twice during the Civil War. It was because of this illness that he later received a pension. Daniel Hoy was mustered out on June 27, 1865 at Cumberland, Maryland.

Daniel Hoy was married to Sarah Kinchloe on 30 of Jan 1866 in a church about 7 Miles NE of Parkersburg, W.Va. Reverend Hodge was the minister. Her parents were Lawrence and Leslie Stagg Kincheloe of Virginia.

Daniel and Sarah started farming in the area and had three children before Daniel got the "westward fever" and moved to Kansas, location unknown. He then moved to Missouri, location unknown, and farmed for nine months. (His family may not have accompanied him on this journey.) It is thought that a brother-in-law may have gone to Kansas as Kinchloes from Kansas visited Daniel and Sarah in later years in Nebraska. Daniel returned to Virginia and farmed for 11 more years. Six more children were born there. The family moved to Lancaster County, Nebraska in 1883 buying 80 acres in the Satillo Precinct. After five years, they moved to nearby Grant Precinct eventually accumulating 240 acres. They became prosperous and well respected. He served as a assessor of Grant Precinct for one year, for twelve years he was a member of the school board, he served as an agent for the Lancaster County Farmers Mutual Insurance Company with success for twenty years and was a stockholder in the Bank of Roca, Nebraska. He was a member of the United Brethern Church, the Knights of Pythias and the Grand Army of the Republic. Three children were born after their arrival in Nebraska.

Sometime in their later years, Sarah and Daniel moved to the city of Lincoln, Nebraska and lived at 1606 Washington Street. They helped raise the children of their daughter, Mazzie Hoy Blackburn, who had died in 1912, until the children moved to be with their father near Scottsbluff, Nebraska. William Hoy, a son who had been handicapped in early childhood, stayed with them until his death in 1914. In 1919, Daniel took his grandchild, Harry, to get his first haircut with electric clippers. It is said that the barber exposed Daniel and Harry Hoy to smallpox. This was just too much for Daniel and he died on February 04 1919 at the age of 72. His wife, Sarah, lived another 10 years dying on July 7, 1929. Daniel and Sarah are buried at the Simmons-Saltillo Cemetery, just 1/4 mile from their farm site in Lancaster County, Nebraska."
