MRS. DAVID MARKHAM DEAD

PIONEER RESIDENT CLOSES LONG AND USEFUL LIFE

Mrs. David Markham Sr. passed away at 11 o'clock Sunday morning, April 2nd, after an illness of three months. The primary trouble was pneumonia, from the effects of which she was never able to rally. The funeral will be held today with services at the home at 10 o'clock, and at the cemetery at 1 o'clock this afternoon. The obsequies will be conducted by the Eastern Star, of which Mrs. Markham was a charter member at this place, and the funeral sermon preached by Rev. Mr. Barkle, pastor of the Presbyterian church of Corning.
Few women of this section of the county were more widely known or more universally respected than Mrs. Markham. She was one of the earliest residents of this vicinity, and lived her life in a way that endeared her to her neighbors, and commanded the respect of all who met her. She leaves not only a large family of relations to mourn her loss, but a host of warm friends who will note with genuine sorrow her passing from among them.
Mrs. Markham was born in 1840 in Pennsylvania, her maiden name being Emaline Conrad. In 1860 she came with her parents to California, making the journey across the plains in the old pioneer fashion. Sacramento was the first home selected in this state. After living for a short time in Sacramento Miss Conrad became the bride of David Markham, and with him came north to brave the dangers of pioneer life in the then new country of the Sacramento Valley. Newville was their first abiding place, but shortly afterwards Mr. Markham obtained possession of the ranch on Stony Creek, near Orland, and their home was made there. It is over fifty years since the young couple settled in their home near this city. For nearly forty years, till Mr. Markham's death 13 years ago, they were never separated. Children were born to them, five sons and one daughter, all of whom are living, and most of whom still cluster within reaching distance of the old homestead
The children, in the order of their seniority, are the following: W. H. Markham of Willows, S. F. Markham of Maricopa, G. W. Markham of Orland, and Mrs. Al. Osborn of Corning, D. A. Markham of Orland, and E. R. Markham of Portland, Oregon. There is also one sister and one brother of the immediate family of the deceased.
