Samuel Conrad was born and raised in Pennsylvania. He learned the trade of Carpentry as a young man. His parents were John Conrad and Elisabeth Grove. He was born in 1802 and lived in Pennsylvania until 1840 when he moved his family west. He married Mary Lukens in 1826. They had ten children, seven were born in Pennsylvania, Two in Iowa and one in Missouri. There move west may have been because of their membership in the Mormon church. At that time Mormons were basically being forced out of some of the Eastern states. They were devout Mormons, Samuel was made one of the first Mormon bishop in the Mormon church. In 1850 He and all ten of his children joined a Wagon train and headed west from Iowa to Sacramento, California. His Son in law Nathan Hawk was a part of the Mormon Battalion and had marched West to fight in the Mexican-American war. Even though the war ended, but he had the chance to see much of California. Came back and talked his father in-law into Moving west.Samuel Bought and equipped three wagons pulled by oxen and joined a eighty wagon train headed for California. They ended up in Sacramento in October 1949 after a seven month trip.Settled in Sacramento and built the Eagle hotel that catered to Gold minors, teamsters. He also built a home for the family. In 1853 the hotel burned down. Samuel moved his family across the river to the town of Washington, what is now west sacramento. Be bought property and eventually had 350 acres which he turned into a farm. He became a successful farmer in the area. He was well known, elected as foreman of the Grand Jury. He also was a charter member of the local Masonic Lodge.
