Mr. Balzen was born Aug. 28, 1917, in Knippa, the son of Julius and Charlotte (Thein) Balzen. Al retired from the Texas Highway Department, where he was manager of the storehouse. He was a member of Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Alice Mills.
Survivors include a brother, Richard Balzen of Kerrville; two nephews, Rick Balzen and Jason Balzen; two nieces, Ann DeGrassi and Sandi Eudey; 12 great-nieces and nephews; and a special friend, Joy Northern of Amarillo.
