Elza Oates
(August 3, 1938 - June 21, 2017)

Elza Oates, 78, of Woodville, passed away Wednesday, June 21, 2017 at Woodland Heights Hospital in Lufkin, Texas.
Visitation will be held Saturday, June 24, 2017 from 5:00 - 8:00 p.m. at Stringer & Griffin Funeral Home in Woodville.
Funeral services will be held Sunday, June 25, 2017, at 2:00 p.m. at Stringer & Griffin Funeral Home with burial in Campground Cemetery near Woodville. Officiating will be Brother Randy Herrington. Serving as pallbearers are John Fuller, Anthony Emert, David Oates, John Oates, Brian Oates, and Luke Nichols. Honorary pallbearers are Stephen McKee and Daniel Neff.
Elza was born August 3, 1938. He was the first-born child of Luther Elza and Carlee (Daniel) Oates. Born to deaf mute parents, Elza developed compassion for the deaf and a sincere love of family very early in his life. His warm and friendly nature endeared him to all who knew him. Being the oldest child, he assumed many responsibilities at a young age. He was often called on by his parents, and by others in the deaf community, to assist with interpreting needs at a time when being deaf presented a multitude of obstacles in everyday life.
He married Verbie McKee in 1957 and for the next 59 years, their long term residences were made in Huntsville and Woodville. Elza was a very generous and loving person who took great pride in doting on all his family members, especially his wife, Verbie, and daughters, Selena and Tianna. Family was always a very important part of his life. In later years, his deep appreciation of family fueled him to become the family expert in genealogy. Through his detective work, he would contact distant family members he had located to quiz them about their ancestry. Elza loved to repeat the interesting stories he was told by newly found family members. Those who had questions about the family lineage would usually look to Elza for the answers.
Throughout his life, Elza held a number of interesting jobs. Along with his two brothers, Johnny and Robert, he founded a private security company in Huntsville and was proud to be known as one of the "Oates Boys". For several years, Elza worked as a deputy sheriff in Tyler County, where he knew just about everyone. After a lengthy career, Elza retired from the Texas Department of Criminal Justice and eventually relocated to his boyhood home in the Cherokee Dies Community, where he and Verbie and their cherished pets lived in peaceful serenity in the house where he was born.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Luther Elza and Carlee (Daniel) Oates and brother, Johnny Oates.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Verbie Oates of Woodville; daughters, Selena Collins and Tianna Moore, both of Woodville; grandchildren, Jewelry Michaud of Beaumont and Kayla Turner & husband, Blake of Woodville; great grandchildren, Austyn Moore and Layla Michaud of Beaumont and Greyson Turner of Woodville; brother, Robert Oates & wife Gloria of Huntsville; sister-in-law, Hazel Oates Davis of Bryan; and many beloved nieces, nephews, cousins, and other relatives.
Services are under the direction of Stringer & Griffin Funeral Home of Woodville.
