~ MOUNT VERNON NEWS ~ Tuesday, 20 January, 1948 - FIRE KILLS 4-YEAR-OLD-BOY - Donald Edwin Dial, 4, burned to death and three other members of the family of Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Dial suffered burns as fire destroyed their three-room cottage on Harcourt road this fore-noon. Edwin Dial, 24, a veteran of the European campaign, received burns on face and neck and a cut left hand in a futile attempt to enter the blazing home to save the boy. His wife, Frances, 23, is in Mount Vernon Hospital-Sanitarium with burns on arms, face, and back. Her condition was termed "good." (omitted) Dial, 10 months old, was burned on head, thigh and ear and was reported in serious condition at the hospital. The body of Donald was found at noon, nearly three hours after the fire started, as city police and firemen, state patrolmen, sheriff's deputies, and neighbors dug in the still-smoldering ruins. While grief-stricken relatives watched in the raw cold, the searching party finally located the charred remains of the child in the southwest corner of the cement-block building where he had apparently been trapped when the fire broke out. The body was taken to the Dowds funeral home. Mrs. Donald Dial, mother of Edwin Dial, said her daughter-in-law was still in bed when the fire broke out, and managed to save the baby, but believed the older boy, who was up and dressed, had left the house ahead of her. It was not until some minutes later that Donald was missed. (omitted 7 more lengthy paragraphs, a couple concerning why it took 2 hours for a fire truck to be on the scene of the burning home) Retyped TJD2013
