Sheriff G. Mack Riley and Deputy Sheriff Query Alexander of Mecklenburg county early Sunday morning were notified by Mrs. Morton that her husband had been expected to reach his home in North Charlotte Saturday afternoon, but that he had failed to arrive. Mecklenburg county officers made an Intensive search on the highway, and the hapless motorist and his car were discovered about 2:30 o'clock yesterday afternoon. The car had proceeded so far down the embankment that it was not readily visible from the highway. During the day many travelers had passed the place where the automobile left the highway, but evidently saw no trace of the car or Morton, over whose body it settled In an upright position. Morton was firmly pinioned under the running board and other portions of the car. He was in a ditch containing water and mud. Death probably resulted almost instantly from the impact of the car when It landed on him after throwing him uum uie macnine as n nuruea down the steep embankment, Sheriff Nlven said. Morton's pocketbook was found on his person with about $200 In currency m li, aiso identification papers. Avails able evidence Indicated that he was alone at the time of the accident. Mack Riley and Deputy Sheriff Query Alexander of Mecklenburg county early Sunday morning were notified by Mrs. Morton that her husband had been expected to reach his home in North Charlotte Saturday afternoon, but that he had failed to arrive. Mecklenburg county officers made an Intensive search on the highway, and the hapless motorist and his car were discovered about 2:30 o'clock yesterday afternoon. The car had proceeded so far down the embankment that it was not readily visible from the highway. During the day many travelers had passed the place where the automobile left the highway, but evidently saw no trace of the car or Morton, over whose body it settled In an upright position. Morton was firmly pinioned under the running board and other portions of the car. He was in a ditch containing water and mud. Death probably resulted almost instantly from the impact of the car when It landed on him after throwing him uum uie macnine as n nuruea down the steep embankment, Sheriff Nlven said. Morton's pocketbook was found on his person with about $200 In currency m li, aiso identification papers. Avails able evidence Indicated that he was alone at the time of the accident. He had left Columbia, S. C, and was on his way home, officers were Informed. The probable approximate hour of the fatal accident was determined by Information from another motorist who saw Morton on the highway shortly before that time. ; : ' .
