James never married. He lived all his life in Salem, MA. He was employed in his earlier years as a Machinist for a sawmill. Later he worked as a Wood Turner and Wood Moulder at
Burgess Areoplane Co. in Marblehead and later in a lumber mill.
James' father passed away when James was 5 years old. Subsequently, he lived with his paternal grandmother, Mary (Tufts) Arrington, his mother and siblings. In 1934 the City Directory indicates he was a partner in a lumber mill with his older brother, Samuel. James and Samuel lived together for many years as other family members passed away. He was predeceased by Samuel, who also had not married.
