John William Gray, 79, of Afton, died at 4:40 p.m. yesterday.
Born June 13, 1875 in Albermarle County, Mr. Gray was the son of the late John Henry and Ida Eubank Gray. He was a retired farmer and lifelong member of the Rodes Methodist Church. Mr. Gray was preceded in death by his wife, Mrs. Fannie Lee Davis Gray in 1938.
Survivors include five sons, Floyd W. Gray, Afton, Gordon W. Gray, Pound, Lewis F. Gray, Tucson, Ariz., Robert H. Gray, Meadows of Dan, and Melvin E. Gray, Columbus, O., four daughters, Mrs. William (Lottie) Hildebrand, Fishersville, Mrs. Merritt (Estelle) Dameron and Mrs. Haywood (Ida) Dameron, both of Afton, and Mrs. Frank (Mary Helen) Keith, Staunton; one brother, Thomas Gray, Richmond; four sisters, Mrs. Lillie Yochum, Harrisburg, Pa., Mrs. Nellie Wickliner and Mrs. Esther Luck, both of Covington, and Mrs. Florence Kent, Staunton; 30 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Body will remain at the Etter Funeral Home. The body will be placed in the Rodes Methodist Church Wednesday at 12 noon where service will be conducted at 1 p.m. by the Rev. Albert Honaker. Interment will be in the church cemetery.
Active pallbearers will be Otho Lowe, James Elliton, William Martin, Stuart Henry, Thomas Lowe and Edward Willis.
Honorary bearers will be nephews of Mr. Gray.
