Mr. Adolf Kucan was born in Slovenia but with the advent of World war 11 and the post war chaos, he had a very disrupted family and work life. He had left school early and became an apprentice metal worker in Murska Sobota, a small town near his birth place of Andrecji, in Slovenia. In July 1942, he received an order of employment from the Hungarian authorities to work in Graz, Austria. This is how he came forcibly to work in Austria. There were many other work locations in Austria after his initial work. There was a two year stay back in Slovenia, possibly in hiding. This was followed by more time in Austria including spending time in two different displaced persons camps.
He finally applied to the International Refugee Organization for migration to Australia and was eventually accepted. He traveled by train from Innsbruck in Austria to Bremmerhafen in Germany. From there he boarded the Norwegian built migrant ship called the Skaubryn. This ship transported him to Port Melbourne where he and most other migrants boarded the train, right there on the dock. They were transported to Bonegilla Migrant Camp near Albury-Wodonga, treading on Australian soil for the first time at the tiny Bonegilla train station.
Within three weeks Adolf had work in Leigh Creek, S.A. He married Christine, a migrant from Austria, in Leigh Creek. After about five years in the coal mine at old Leigh Creek, working for ETSA, Mr. Kucan moved to Adelaide with his wife and child.
In Adelaide he worked at the Stonyfell Quarry as a boilermaker. He was able to enjoy a number of years in retirement before passing away in 1987 at the age of 67.
