Actor. He inherited the role of British spy 'James Bond, 007' from Sean Connery, beginning with "Live and Let Die" (1973) and concluding with "View to a Kill" (1985). His father was a police officer (bobby); his mother was a homemaker; Roger took a liking to art and painting during his youth. He later found his interest in acting and enrolled at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London, where he studied Drama. He initiated his professional career as a performer with minor roles on the London stage and during his time of National Service with the British Military, shortly after the end of World War II, he served with an entertainment unit in Germany. Moore briefly worked as a model for a number of publications, while gradually working his way into British television. Among one of his first roles of substance was in the 1950 TV-Movie "Drawing-Room Detective." He alternated between films and television and during the later part of the 1950s, he played 'Sir Wilfred Ivanhoe' in the TV series "Ivanhoe" (1959 to 1960). This was followed by his part as 'Silky Harris' in the American TV program "The Alaskans" (1959 to 1960). He became a familiar presence to American TV audiences when he played 'Beauregarde Maverick' in the series "Maverick" (1959 to 1961) and further established his stardom in his native England with his role as spy 'Simon Templar' in the long-running series "The Saint" (1962 to 1969). In addition, he played the part of 'Lord Brett Sinclair' opposite Tony Curtis in the series "The Persuaders! (1971 to 1972). Moore was tapped to succeed Sean Connery as the Ian Fleming character 'James Bond, 007' in "Live and Let Die" (1973), for which established him as a major box office attraction internationally. Further 'Bond' films include "The Man with the Golden Gun" (1974), "The Spy Who Loved Me" (1977), "Moonraker" (1979), "For Your Eyes Only" (1981), "Octopussy" (1983) and "View to a Kill" (1985). In addition, he co-starred in the films "Shout at the Devil" (1976), "Wild Geese" (1978), "The Sea Wolves" (1980) and "The Cannonball Run" (1981). Moore played the role of 'Sherlock Holmes' in the TV-Movie "Sherlock Holmes in New York" (1976). He was created a Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 1999 and rose to Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 2003. In 2007, he was the recipient of a star on Hollywood's Walk of Fame. Moore served as a Special Representative for UNICEF. He was married four-times including marriages to Welsh singer Dorothy Squires and Italian actress Luisa Mattioli. He died from cancer.
