William Martin "Willie" Thompson, 96, Mintonville, died Wednesday, March 23, at Fair Oaks Nursing Home in Jamestown after a lengthy illness.

He had been a farmer, timberman, and railroad worker.

A Wayne County native, he was born Feb. 6, 1887, in the Kidder community. His parents were Terrill and Amanda Cassady Thompson.

His marriage took place Sept. 2, 1909, to the former Selesta Francis Hardwick, who preceded him in death Feb. 10, 1974.

Survivors include three sons, Charlie Thompson, Mintonville, Chester Thompson, Norwood, Ohio, and Lloyd Thompson, Muncie, Ind.; four daughters, Iva Pittman, Muncie, Ind, Alma McFalls, Indianapolis, Ind., Matrey Wilson, Albany, Ind., and Ella Mae Buis, Liberty; two brothers, Joda Thompson, Argyle, and Leo Thompson, Cincinnati, Ohio; two sisters, Myrtie Spaw, Mintonville, and Gertie Spaw, Yosemite; 43 grandchildren, 90 great-grandchildren; and 28 great-great-grandchildren.

Preceding him in death were three sons, Hubert, Robert Dale, and Hollis Thompson; a daughter, Minnie Waddle, three brothers, three sisters, and seven grandchildren.

He was a charter member of Carter Ridge Baptist Church, where Bro. Paul Godby will conduct services at 2 p.m. tomorrow.

Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Visitation will begin after 3 p.m. today at Morris and Hislope Funeral Home, Science Hill, which is in charge of arrangements.
