Ray Barnes was born in, or near Mount Hope, Sedgwick County, Kansas. Ray was the next older brother of Elijah Harry Barnes (1902-1973), and the uncle of Gene H. Barnes (1928-2007), who are also buried in this cemetery in Memorial Section C, lot 165, which is 175 feet or so, to the southwest of where Ray and Bernice are buried. Bernice's marker is located in the next row east of Ray's.
Note that a 1902 Mount Hope, Kansas newspaper article states that Ray's father was closing the meat market he operated and was heading out for the new country which as it turned out meant western Colorado.

Ray was the fourth of eight children born to George Richard Barnes (1870-1944) and Rose "Rosie" Emma Kincaid Barnes (1873-1944). Ray's middle initial M., stands for Morrell, per his wife Bernice.

As shown in the 1920 census, Ray M. Barnes, age 20, was employed as a laborer in a radium mine. Residence in Naturita Twp., Montrose County, Colorado.

Ray Barnes, age 24, born 1900, resident of Yellville, Marion County, Arkansas, was married to Ester Faris, age 20, resident of Norfolk, Baxter County, Arkansas. They were married in Izard County, Arkansas on August 23, 1924. Their marriage license was issued the day before, August 22nd. (Arkansas, County Marriages Index, 1837-1957)

Ray and Ester were later living in Mountain Home, Baxter County, Arkansas.

A photo included here has the caption, "Ray Barnes, sawmill, Arkansas." In this photo, Ray is on foot and holding the reins of two mules. Mules were used to pull the logs from where the trees had been felled and cut. If you've seen this done, the mules pull hard and fast, as if the mules understand it's easier to keep something heavy in motion than it is to stop and start again. The person controlling the reins has to know what they are doing and be very alert. So, was Ray in Arkansas the same time his brother Harry was there, and the same locality? Yes. Harry Barnes married Mary E. Hall at nearby Rodney, Arkansas on August 9, 1924.
From bits and pieces of verbal stories it's felt that George Barnes and his son (E.) Harry were also working at a sawmill there. Was it the same one?

The marriage between Ray and Ester ended, no other details are known at this time.

At Hand Cemetery, located near Jordan in Baxter County, Arkansas, there is a Jay Barnes, no dates, buried between an Esther Lee Friend (8-16-1904-1-4-1994) and Dyano (Diane?) Faris. Others with the last name of Faris are buried there. Could Esther Friend be Ray's first wife?
[April 27, 2016]; Yes, this is Ray's wife, Esther. The 1940 census also shows that Ray and Esther had other children;

Home, Arkansas. Funeral services were held at Gillies Funeral Home chapel in Lynden. Burial in Nooksack Cemetery, Washington.
5. Jay Barnes?
Dates of birth and death are not shown on headstone. Jay is buried next to Ester Friend in Hand Cemetery in Arkansas. With the last name Barnes and being buried right next to Ester, it's an easy argument that this is a child of Ray Barnes and his first wife Ester Farris who later married Loyd Friend.

Ray Barnes met Bernice Hough in Wichita, Kansas and were married there on August 19, 1937. They lived at a house at 558 South Illinois Street in Wichita. Ray's nephew Gene H. Barnes also pointed out this house as one that Ray once lived in. Today (2012), that house sets next to (on the north side of) the former Hampton Inn West Hotel at 3800 W. Kellogg.

Ray and Bernice had two children;
1. Patricia "Pat" (Barnes) Rackie-Peterson. She has lived in Albuquerque, New Mexico, Pittsburg, Pennsylvania, Wichita, Kansas, Missouri, and most recently, back in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
Pat has 2 sons, Deron (Daneen) Rackie and Brian Rackie.
2. Russell Barnes, resides in Wichita, Kansas. Russell has 2 children, Doug (Pam) Barnes and Stephanie Barnes.

The 1940-41, and 1943 Wichita City Directory shows Ray M. Barnes and wife Bernice M. living at 4101 (West) St. Louis Street. Ray's occupation was shown as laborer.

Ray was 57 at the time of his death. He was in Wichita visiting relatives during the Christmas holidays and suffered a heart attack. Ray was employed by Ryan Phelps Construction Company of Sayre, Oklahoma, and had been a resident of Sayre for 11 years.
Ray was survived by his wife Bernice, of 727 S. Gordon, Wichita; their children, Patricia and Russell Barnes, all of Sayre, Oklahoma; a son Merle, and two daughters, Mrs. Doyle Cheek and Mrs. Joyce Pruitt, children of a former marriage, as well as four grandchildren, all residing in Houston, Texas. Funeral services were held at Broadway Mortuary Chapel in Wichita, Kansas.

On Memorial Day weekend 2016, we noticed that flowers had been left on the graves of Ray, Bernice and Bernice's parents. We did the same. (Larry and Mike Barnes, sons of Gene H. Barnes, nephew of Ray.)
