Reed Andrus Bowthorpe "Sweethearts Forever" Our beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend, Reed Andrus Bowthorpe, age 86, passed away peacefully in Holladay, Utah, February 10, 2007, from complications of aplastic anemia. He was born November 17, 1920 in Holladay, Salt Lake County, Utah to Dennis Fay and Emily Laverne Andrus Bowthorpe. He married his childhood sweetheart, Mable Lillian Carter, November 30, 1938 in the Salt Lake Temple. They spent 58 wonderful years together. Lillian passed away May 7, 1997. Reed lived in Holladay all of his life and for the past 15 years he lived in St. George, Utah during the winter time. Reed's life was filled with love, happiness, hard work, and adventure. He was a businessman and was well known in Holladay and Sandy. He started working at the young age of 12 at his father's Holladay Feed Store. He later owned the Holladay Feed and Bike Shop with his brother. In 1977 Reed and Lillian opened up their own business, Alta Schwinn Cyclery on State Street in Sandy, where they worked side by side until their retirement in 1985. Reed enjoyed traveling with Lillian, especially to Alaska, Arizona, all over Utah, and to Mexico where they spent many winters exploring the beaches along the Sea of Cortez on their ATV. He loved the outdoors and instilled that love in his children. He spent many wonderful years exploring the mountains and deserts with Lillian and his family. Reed served in the Army in World War II. He also served in his community as president of the Holladay Lions Club. Reed was one of the first volunteer firemen in Holladay and has one of the longest records of service, 60 years, in the Salt Lake County Fire Department. Dad was an avid rock hound and an amateur archeologist. He belonged to the Wasatch Gem Society, the Mineralogical Society of Utah, the Salt Lake-Davis Chapter and Dixie Chapter of the Utah State Archeological Society, and the Lahonton Archaeology Club. He enjoyed doing flint knapping, lapidary work and was a talented silversmith. He made many beautiful pieces of jewelry for his family and friends. Reed loved hunting and was affectionately known as "Bull of the Woods" to his friends and family. He was an avid fly fisherman. He loved fishing for trout in Utah, salmon in Idaho and Alaska, where he once landed a 68 pound king salmon. Reed's greatest love in life was being a husband, father, and grandfather. He was so proud of his family and loved every one of them. Reed is survived by two sons, Dennis (Annette Peay), Heber, Dale (Judy Sjoblom) Highland; two daughters, Kathrine Bowthorpe, Magna, Debra (DeWayne A.) Pendleton, Cottonwood Heights; 16 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchil-dren (with three more on the way); sister, Belva (Dennis) Higgins; brother, Bruce (Marilyn) Bowthorpe, both of Holladay; sister-in-law, Shirley Carter, Orem; and many nieces, nephews, and friends. He was preceded in death by his eternal sweetheart, Lillian; his parents; two brothers, Orson and Sterling; and one sister, Donna. Graveside service will be held Tuesday, February 13, 2007, 11 a.m., at the Holladay Memorial Park, 4900 South Memory Lane (1990 East), Holladay. Friends may call Monday night 6-8 p.m., and one hour before the service between 9:45-10:45 a.m. at the Holladay-Cottonwood Mortuary, 4670 South Highland Drive, Holladay. Dad lived a life of honesty and integrity. Goodbye, Dad. We love you and will miss you dearly. Your "Honey Bunch" is waiting for you!
