Morristown Gazette, Wednesday, July 13, 1904:

"Walter S. McFarland.
-----
About 10 o'clock last Sunday morning, Walter S. McFarland died at his home here after a long illness. He was a son of the late Hon. William McFarland, who represented the First Congressional district in the lower House in 1874-76. Walter McFarland was for several years foreman of the street force of laborers of Morristown and was in the employ of the city when taken sick last winter. His death is regretted by all who knew him. He leaves his wife, one brother, Thomas McFarland, who is in the west, and three sisters, Mrs. Eva Dickson and Mrs. R. R. Smith, of Morristown, and Mrs. George Williams, of North Carolina. Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at the home and the interment was at the city cemetery."

According to his obituary, his brother Thomas was still living and had not died in 1880.
