Job Sr. served in the military during 1757 French and Indian War Company in Fort Edward, New York, when he was 20 years old.

He married Mary Trumbull (1740–1816) in 1762 in his hometown. They had six children during their marriage. His son Captain Job Ellsworth, Jr. was born on August 26, 1766, in Connecticut.
