Purvis R. Huff was born on October 23, 1926 in Amite County Mississippi. He attended Crosby High School and later graduated from Louisiana State University with a degree in Forestry. He joined the US Air Force in 1944 and served until the end of World War II.

Mr. Huff enjoyed a lifetime career as consulting forester, managing timberland throughout the Southeast and cultivating lifelong loyal relationships with many a landowner for more than 50 years. He was the owner of Forestry Consultants, Inc., and was a pioneer in the business of forest management and conservation practices.

Having many interests, Mr. Huff was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed spending time in the woods studying wildlife, admiring the trees, and bass fishing. His children accompanied him on these fishing trips, getting up before dawn to find the best fishing spots. He taught his children how to waterski behind a small 18-foot aluminum bass boat with an 18hp Evinrude outboard motor, though he had never donned a pair of skis himself.

For vacation his family could expect him to pile everyone into the station wagon and travel to the Ozark Mountains or the Smokies for a week of camping. He was never happier than when he spent time at his weekend country home on Brushy Creek near the Homochitto National Forest in Southwest Mississippi, sharing time with his children and grandchildren on the walking trails and sand bars at the creek.

Mr. Huff is preceded in death by his father, Purvis R. Huff, Sr., his mother, Carmen Poole Huff Pryzyblski, sister, Carlene Brewer (Jimmy), and brothers, Cameron Huff (Polly), Dean Huff (Violet) and also his son, Jeffrey Anderson Huff (Kathy).

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Alice Evelyn Anderson Huff, sister, Barbara Evans, daughter, Karen Huff Hacskaylo (Eddie), and sons, Kevin Darrell Huff (Nanette) and Matthew Allen Huff (Jennifer). He was proud to claim 7 grandchildren, Anna Hederman (Will), Ashley Sparks (Aaron), Carly Sink (Joel), Madeline Huff, Claire Hacskaylo, Emily Huff and Landon Huff. He was overjoyed when his great grandchildren arrived–Timothy and Anders Sparks–and was eagerly awaiting the arrival of his third great grandson, William Beck Hederman, Jr.

Mr. Huff will be missed by family and friends.

While this world may miss a quick smile and teasing spirit, we know heaven will have a new stand of timber coming up soon.

Visitation will be 10:00-11:00am, Thursday, May 11, 2017, at Mount Vernon Methodist Church in Gloster. Funeral services will follow at 11:00am, with interment in the church cemetery.
