Helen was born October 23, 1921, in rural Oldham, SD, to Paul and Minnie (Larson) Marek. Helen completed her school years at the Menzel school 1 ½ miles east of the farm she was born on, and she spent her whole life in South Dakota. Helen's Kingsbury County roots go back to her grandfather Ole Larson, whose homestead certificate for 160 acres near Lake Thompson was dated May 2, 1887.
On March 29, 1941, she married Louis (Lewis) Glaser in Rock Rapids, Iowa and they spent their married life in and around Kingsbury County (until 1957) and Sioux Falls (since 1957). As a farm girl, then a full-time homemaker, Helen served her family and friends well with her cooking, baking, and sewing skills. She always enjoyed old-time dances and polka music, often at the Moose Lodge. Our Savior's Lutheran Church was a frequent destination for Helen: she was a long time quilter, Sunshine Visitation committee member, Bible Study circle member, and participant on several Our Savior's sponsored bus trips.
Helen is lovingly remembered by her children: Gary (Pat) Glaser of Boise, ID, Dallas (Ruth) Glaser of Rochester, MN, and Sandra Bickett of Sioux Falls; eleven grandchildren; sixteen great grand-children; siblings: Duane Marek of Lakewood, CA and Phyllis Nelson of Lake Preston, SD.
Helen was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Louis; sister, Erma; sister, Edna; brother, Walter; and several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday May 12, 2017, at Our Savior's Lutheran Church, 909 W. 33rd Street in Sioux Falls with Reverend Tim Lemme officiating. Visitation will take place at the church from 10-11 AM Friday May 12. Burial will be at the Lake Preston Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Our Savior's Lutheran Church, especially the quilters.
