Sharon Paulette Giles, age 55, of Newcastle, Oklahoma passed away Wednesday, June 27, 2001 as the result of an automobile accident near Shawnee, OK. She was born October 19, 1945 in Claremore, Oklahoma the daughter of Luther and Delores (Starr) Grayson. She was raised in Okmulgee, graduating from Okmulgee High School in May of 1963.

Sharon began her college career at Northeastern State University in Tahlequah earning her teachers certification. She later enrolled at the University of Oklahoma in Norman pursuing a Masters in Education.

Sharon was united in marriage to Mr. Roy Dean Giles on August 5, 1966 in Vinita, Oklahoma. Roy and Sharon made their home in Okemah, OK where Sharon taught in the Public School System there for 7 years. They later moved to Newcastle where Sharon was employed with the Newcastle Public School Systems for 22 years before retiring in 1996 as the High School Librarian.

After her retirement she began a new phase of her professional career in February of 1998 when she became director of the tribally operated Sac and Fox National Public Library near Stroud, Oklahoma. There she administered a full range of public library programs, which includes an archives division, permanent and temporary exhibits, and special educational and historical programs. She oversaw the library's celebration of its tenth anniversary in 1999. It was under her guidance that the library became Internet accessible, which means the tribe is now reaching out to its members and the world by sharing the rich history of the Sac and Fox Nation. At the time of her death Sharon was working to develop an official website for the Sac and Fox Nation, and preparing a "wall of fame" to feature photographs of all Sac and Fox Senior Men and Women winners, Sharon showed her devotion to the young women working with her in the library by serving as a mentor to them. She was a member of the awards review board of the Sac and Fox Employees Committee for three years and served as master of ceremonies for their awards program in April of this year. Sharon was an active member of the First Christian Church in Moore. She also was an active member of the American Red Cross where she volunteered for various responsibilities. She was a member of the Sigma Sigma Sigma Sorority, a member of the nationally recognized academic organization Phi Beta Kappa and was also chosen to be a part of the elite group of Who's Who in American Colleges. Sharon was very proud of her Native American Ancestry and was a citizen of the Muscogee (Creek) Nation. In her spare time she enjoyed reading, watching movies, spending time at the computer, sewing and sports.

Through all of her affiliations, associations, achievements and interests, Sharon was most proud and enjoyed life with her husband, Roy and their two daughters, Deana and Joy.
