Shirley was born on June 26, 1933 in North Platte, Nebraska to Rodney Lee & Mabel Iness Blakeman. Her family migrated to Salinas California when she was 5 years old and lived there for the next 70 years. Shirley graduated from Salinas High School in 1951. After graduating, she met and married the love of her life, Walter Hunsaker, Jr. whom she married in April 1952 and remained married to until his death in July 2007.

Shirley's greatest passion in life was being a wife and mother. She was blessed with her first daughter, Karen in April 1953 and she proudly gave birth to her second daughter Debbie in March 1955. In April 1961, she was overjoyed with the birth of her only son, Kurt.

Shirley was a homemaker and a volunteer Pink Lady at Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital until her children where almost grown at which time she started working in the school system as a campus supervisor. After her children no longer were in school, she started a new career as a sales clerk in the jewelry department at Mervyn's Department Store. She retired from her sales clerk job in 1986.

During her retirement years, she became a member of Angela's Angels and The Salvation Army's Senior Group. She also attended the Salinas Adult School and took numerous classes doing various different crafts where she made many new friends.

Shirley loved spending time with her family and friends, playing bingo and crocheting beautiful warm blankets for all the members of her family and friends. One of her greatest joys was playing with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. During her early retirement years she enjoyed traveling with her husband in their motorhome and going fishing with both of their brother and sisters.
