Derinda was the eleventh and last child of Manuel P. and Rosie Vargas. She was born at 6 o'clock in the evening on July 19, 1925. She was baptized at St Michael's Church on July 26, 1925 with her godparents being her father's brother, Joseph P. Vargas and his wife, Roseline. Derinda died of pneumonia when she was 6 months old, after being sick for six days.
