Dec 9, 1923 ~ Sept 27, 2016
Bernice was born in Livermore CA to Manual and Rose Vargas. She was the 10th child of their 11 children. She attended Highland School a one-room school in the Livermore Hills and San Ramon High School.
She met her husband, Fred "Curly" Moore, while he was working on her father's ranch. According to both of their personal biographies, it was love at first sight. They married, December 20, 1941 at St. Michaels Parish in Livermore. In early 1944 Curly joined the Army and Bernice and their daughter DeLois went to live on her parent's ranch, Bernice was needed to help with tasks as so many had gone to war. Curly was discharged, and he worked at the ranch. When their son Robert was born Bernice and Curly moved to the little town of Modesto. This is where their son Dennis was born. They remained in Modesto throughout their lives.
Her title for her first home on Granger Avenue was "Their Little Okie Shack." However, she was quite a homemaker and made that little shack cute and homey. Sewing was her favorite past time One could leave in the morning and come home to a new outfit, a recovered couch, new curtains, a painted room, some delicious desert, homemade jam or some type of canned fruit or vegetables. She was always busy doing something. In her world, there was a place for everything, and everything had its place. Bernice was a devoted mother and grandmother; she loved spending time with her family and had a true zest for life.
After her children were all attending school she began working at Haig Berberian Walnut Company and soon became a Floor Supervisor. Curly had always wanted to own a drive in restaurant and they purchased the Waterford A&W Root Beer Drive-In which they operated for about 4 years and then sold. When they sold the A&W they began working for her cousin's circus "Circus Vargas" as PR personnel. Their job was to go ahead of the circus to make preparations for its' arrival. This included obtaining permits, ticket distribution to the local schools, setting up hospital visits for the clowns to entertain children who were life threatened or ill. This was a rewarding job, that took them all over the Western United States. Upon retirement from the circus, she and Curly golfed and began traveling. They toured much of the United States, Europe, China and Japan, enjoying every minute. When they were not traveling they attended local Senior dances and were very active members of Our Lady of Fatima Parish. They attended this parish from it's beginning. She was member the Knights Ladies, OLF Seniors Club, Journey in Christianity, Muni Niners, Modesto, Riverbank and Manteca Senior Citizens Clubs.
Bernice is preceded in death by her husband Fred "Curly" Moore, her sons Robert and Dennis Moore, son-in-law John E. Corrin, Jr., her parents Manuel and Rose Vargas and her sisters Erma, Bettencourt, Margaret Perry, Rosalie Glass, Elsie Anderson, Anne and Dorinda Vargas, and her brothers Manuel, Ernest, Herman and Edward Vargas.
