ADDITIONAL BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION:

Polly Strong was born about 1868 to James and Rutha Strong. The family lived in Ozark County, Missouri. Her mother died in 1879 and her father married his second wife Mrs. Sarah A. Isom in July, 1879.

Polley C. Strong married George W. Adams on May 13, 1886 in Ozark County, Missouri. They were both from Gainsville in Ozark County, Missouri. He was a veteran of the Civil War, having served in Company B, Regiment 16 of the Missouri Calvary. In January, 1888 he filed for a pension as an invalid. On February 25, 1908 Polly C. Adams filed for a pension as his widow.

Polly C. Adams about age 41 married Mathew H. Thompson age 67 on December 13, 1909 in Bolivar, Missouri. He was about the same age as her first husband and similarly was a Civil War veteran. They lived in Ionia, Kansas. Mathew died in January, 1918. After his death Polly remained at Ionia and worked as a servant. She also filed for a Civil War pension from her husband Mathew.

Polly Thompson age 52 married Frederick Hoffert age 54 in Ionia, Kansas on May 19, 1921. He was from Rolfe, Iowa and they returned to Iowa.

Polly was listed as being unable to read or write in the 1920 US census, but as able to read and write in the 1930 US census, and as grade 3 as the highest education level in the 1940 US census.

The gravestone has her birth year as 1878; however, the obituary, census records, and marriage records consistently indicate her birth year was 1868 or 1869. The birth year of 1868 is used in this memorial assuming 1878 should have been 1868.
