Etta's mother Dula died when Etta was 12. Her father, James Franklin remarried shortly after Dula's death. Life was difficult during those years, all of the children had to work in the fields to help support the family. Etta dreamed of someday getting out go the fields and wearing clean nice clothing, something that was impossible as she was growing up. In a letter she said she always felt like they worked harder not smarter. I don't know if Etta found a way to work smarter but she succeeded in getting out of the fields, working in an office and wearing nice cloths. In her later years Etta lived with her daughter.
Etta married Urban Forrest Cox when she was 23 years old. They had one child, a daughter, Ladye Urbanelle Cox.
Etta died in 1981 of colon cancer. She is buried next to her beloved daughter.
