PORTAGE TWP. MAN IS KILLED ON STATE ROAD
Leslie Reich, Father of Four, Hit by Truck While Fixing Tire
Leslie Reich, 29, of Crisman, father of four children, was instantly killed Thursday afternoon on US Road 20 a few miles east of Gary, when a truck-trailer smashed into two cars parked at the roadside. Reich, who was repairing a tire on one of the cars, was thrown through the open door and suffered a broken neck, leg and internal injuries.
State police today issued a warrant for the arrest of George T. Gatsis, of Chicago, for parking his car on a public highway, and coroner Carl M. Davis has tentatively set an inquest for Saturday morning to determine responsibility for the crash.
Driver of the truck-trailer, Frank Corsand of flint, Mich., was brought to Porter county jail after the fatal accident, by state police. After being questioned this morning by Coroner Davis he was ordered released.
According to testimony Corsand, driving for the Motor Car Transport Company, of Flint, Mich., was returning there from Chicago yesterday afternoon and eight miles our of Gary noticed two cars parked on the roadside. He claimed on of them stood half on the highway. Realizing that to swing over into the next lane would cause a mishap with a car just behind him, Corsand moved to his left as far as he could but not enough to avoid the parked car.
After slowing down his truck sideswiped the passenger car, the impact ripping off his gas tank, which burst into flames. Corsand jumped out and, with the help of another trucker, Kenneth Shepard, extinguished the fire.
Corsand testified that Reich was killed instantly. The victim's body was removed by ambulance to Hobart.
