This small stone has been a curiosity in this cemetery for decades. It becomes a topic of conversation when Johnson Chapel cemetery comes under discussion. I believe this is probably the burial site for Mr. William E. Hopper, after reading an issue of the Des Arc newspaper for October of 1909. Mr. Hopper was injured, or became ill, somehow. The men riding (horses) with him decided to leave him to die/recover. Some days later, they came back to check on him. The locals inquired as to his name. The men eventually left again, without Mr. Hopper. Mr. Hopper died shortly, thereafter. The newspaper article stated that this series of events occurred in the Johnson Chapel community, and that this man was buried there. I believe this could be the individual buried on the single knoll at the back of the cemetery with a grave marker that reads only "unknown dead". I do not know when the marker was placed; nor who put it there. If others have a different theory, or know more about this marker, please come forward.
