Frank Almond Witt Jr., 94, of Grundy, passed away at his home Friday, Feb. 2, 2007, following a brief illness. Born in Bramwell, he was the son of the late Frank Almond and Lydia Haynes Witt. He had been a resident of Buchanan County, Va., for the past 67 years. Mr. Witt was a member of Buchanan First Presbyterian Church where he was a member since 1950. He served as a Deacon and Elder and was Superintendent of Sunday School for many years. He was an employee for Harman Mining Company where he first worked in the mines and then as a purchasing agent for many years until his retirement in 1978. He also co-owned and operated W & W Coal Company for many years. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corp twice. Once before World War II and again during World War II. He served during World War II with the 37th Fighter Squadron in North Africa and Europe. He was a member of John Ratliff Post No. 164 of American Legion and a Master Mason of Sandy Valley Lodge No. 17 AF and AM and Kazim Temple in Roanoke, Va. He was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Bonnie McClanahan Witt on June 6, 1997. Mr. Witt is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Edwin (Lynn) Bunn of Grundy, and Mrs. Leroy (Kaye) Jones of Abingdon, Va.; two sisters, Dorothy Fitzwater of Martinsburg, Va., and Hope Craft of Shamokin, Penn.; one brother, Bill Witt of Abingdon; four grandchildren, Brian Christian of Richmond, Va., Kevin Christian of Bristol, Va., Katy and husband Jason Davidson of Abingdon, and Andy Bunn of Atlanta, Ga.; two great-grandchildren, Collin Davidson of Abingdon, and Connor Davidson of Abingdon. Frank was survived by some individuals who with their devotion provided him with many years of love, care, companionship and happiness, Mary, Michele and Matthew Spencer, Deanna, Pollard, Jordan and Emilee Shortt, and Lucy Looney and Irene Looney. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Frankie Jean Witt and two sisters, Lydia Richardson and Frances Morgan. Funeral services for Frank Almond Witt Jr. will be conducted Sunday, Feb. 4, 2007, at 3 p.m. at Buchanan First Presbyterian Church in Grundy with the Rev. Jeff Porter and Elder Bill Parrish officiating with entombment to follow in Mountain Valley Memorial Park at Big Rock, Va. Friends may call at Buchanan First Presbyterian Church after 1 p.m. today. There will be a Masonic service at the church at 2:30 p.m. Active pallbearers will be Mark Mutter, Chuck Crabtree, Clint Sutherland, Pollard Shortt, Lewis Holland and Gary Christian. Honorary pallbearers will be Elders and Deacons of Buchanan First Presbyterian Church.
