Master Sergeant Willie Woodson Wilkerson was a casualty of the Vietnam War. As a member of the Army, MSG Wilkerson served our country until July 23rd, 1966 in South Vietnam. He was 39 years old and was married. It was reported that Willie died from illness or disease at Walter Reed Army Hospital after falling ill in Vietnam. Willie was born on September 3rd, 1926 in Willow Springs, North Carolina. MSG Wilkerson is on panel 09E, line 064 of the Vietnam Memorial Wall in Washington D.C. He served our country for 22 years.
Last year I got an email about the picture drive from the Special Forces folks at Fort Bragg (when the moving Wall was there). I asked one of his brothers & family about a picture at that time and was told there was one "somewhere". It's about time to try again, and your email is just a good friendly reminder for me to try again soon, so glad you sent it. Also, he has other more immediate family too, so I've got a few more places I can be looking for a picture, as well. About MSG Willie Woodson Wilkerson: He was named after my father, Willie Duncan. His mother was Pearl Duncan Wilkerson, my father's sister. I don't know how his Army buddies knew him, but everyone in the family called him "Brother". Always guessed it was to distinguish him from my father. But a good name for an Army buddy. I know he served a tour in Korea, came out of the service for a short time and rejoined prior to Vietnam. Best I remember he had more than one tour there. He died at Walter Reed the same day as his mother died in NC, and within hours of each other. Neither knowing of the other's death. Needless to say, it was a sad day for the entire family. I remember that day well.
He is the Son of Mr Roy and Mrs Pearl Duncan Wilkerson.
He served with Headquarters and Headquarters Detachment, Headquarters Area Command, USARV.
He was awarded The Bronze Star Medal, The World War II Occupation Medal, The World War II Victory Medal, The Korean Service Medal, The Korean Defense Medal, The United Nations Service Medal, The Vietnam Service Medal, The Republic of Vietnam Campaign Service Medal, The National Defense Service Medal, The Good Conduct Medal(s), The Air Medal and The Army Commendation Medal.
