Chester County school board member Laurens Fort died unexpectedly early Thursday, said Rebecca Crouch, administrative assistant for the district.

“Chester County School District staff, friends and family are saddened by the passing of board member Dr. Laurens Fort,” Crouch wrote in a statement.

Fort had served on the schol board since 2007. His wife, Brenda Fort, is principal at Great Falls Complex.

“Dr. Fort was deeply committed to improving the education of the students of Chester County,” Crouch wrote. “Our thoughts and prayers are with Mrs. Fort and the family. Dr. Fort will be greatly missed.”

Fort was born and raised in Great Falls, and was the only dentist in that area for decades.

Fort was also an avid supporter of Great Falls athletics and academics. Dr. Larens W Fort Jr., 77, died Thursday, March 23, 2017, at Springs Memorial Hospital. Funeral services will be held at 3:00 PM on Sunday, March 26, 2017, at Mt. Dearborn United Methodist Church with Rev. David Ussery officiating. Interment will follow in Greenlawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM on Saturday, March 25, at Dantzler-Baker Funeral Home, 26 Underwood Ave., Great Falls, SC.

Dr. Fort was born March 18, 1940 in Great Falls, SC and was a son of the late Dr. L.W. Fort, Sr. and Grace Hunt Fort. He was a graduate of Great Falls High School, attended Emory University, and was a graduate of Wofford College. He received his D.M.D. degree at University of Louisville in Kentucky. Dr. Fort served in the U.S. Air Force Dental Corp and returned to Great Falls in 1971 where he practiced dentistry until his death. He was a member of Mt. Dearborn United Methodist Church and was active in various leadership positions. Dr. Fort was also a member of Sigma Nu Fraternity, was presently serving on the Chester County School Board, was the athletic photographer for the Great Falls Red Devils and was a reserve police officer for Great Falls for the past 20 years.

He is survived by his wife, Brenda Seebold Fort; two sons, Laurens Fort, III of Charlotte, NC and Jamie Fort of Blackstock; five grandchildren, Matthew, Justin and Jesse Fort and Christian and Will Banks; one sister, Sara Fort Ferguson (Charles) of Great Falls; and several nieces and nephews.
