Married Mary Wagner. She died in 1868 and he 2nd married Ellen (nee: Unknown)
John owned a furniture store in Tarrytown where he made furniture and caskets.
Later he established the Vanderbilt Funeral Home, which stayed in his family for 4 generations.
He was a Charter member and Elder of the Second Reformed Church at the date of it's organization. He, Mary and his son John J. were very active in the church activities.
