THE OIL EXCITEMENT IN LOCK HAVEN.— On Saturday three committees, composed of Messrs. Boggis, Blesh, Houtz and Joseph Candor, J. C. Brown and L. B. SCHUYLER were out to get subscriptions "towards defraying the expenses of putting down a test well in the vicinity of Lock Haven. The joint Result was about $1,200 stock in $25 shares, with promises that it is thought can be relied upon to bring this up $400 or $800 more within a few days. It is the purpose of the committee to renew their efforts and keep at it till they get the required sum, about $4,000, and they appeal to the business men and property holders to come forward and meet their requirements, so as to settle the question whether or not there is oil at this point. If so, it will be the best investment ever made at this point. If not, no serious injury will occur to any one, as the losses will be small. Soon as the amount is raised, the organization will take place and a well be put down at once at such point as a majority may determine. —Clinton Democrat.

Death of L. B. Schuyler.
A Former Resident of Lock Haven Dies Suddenly in Williamsport Monday.
Monday afternoon a telephone message from Williamsport announced the sudden death of Lucas B. Schuyler, a former resident of this city. Mr. Schuyler has been for some time a resident of Williamsport and was salesman in the dry goods store of Uriah Megahan. He was at one time a member of the firm of Melick & Schuyler, grocers, doing business in this city, and had a large circle of acquaintances in Lock Haven and vicinity. His wife, Miss Ada Russell, of this city, sister of Miss Laura Russell, of the Telephone Exchange, and also a sister to Mrs. Thomas Crawford. The deceased had been in usual good health, and his sudden death was a great shock to his relatives and friends here. He was a brother of John S. Schuyler, the well known backman, and cousin to J. Schuyler, Jr., proprietor of the Fallon House, and A. J. Schuyler, collector of school taxes. The deceased was a member of John S. Bittner, Post G.A.R., of this city. The Williamsport Gazette and Bulletin give the following particulars of the sad affair:
Yesterday afternoon Lucas B. Schuyler, salesman in the large dry goods house of Uriah Megahan, Pine street, died after an illness of less than three hours. He had returned from dinner at his house to the store, and seemed to be in a cheerful mood; a few minutes before 2 o’clock, while standing behind the muslin counter he gave a terrible groan and fell to the floor. Other employes of the store promptly rushed to his assistance and lifted him to the counter. Dr. Max J. Reinhold was sent for, and in a short time was present. The doctor pronounced the case similar to an epiletpic fit; to a short time Mr. Schuyler revived sufficient to enable him to sit up on the counter. But this rest was of short duration, as he soon dropped over in another fit, which was followed by others, numbering in all about nine attacks and then expired. After the second attack he remained unconscious up to the time of the departure of the last vital spark. Dr. Ed. Lyon was in attendance after, the second attack came on, and every thing possible was done to relieve the unfortunate man, Mr. Megahan, the proprietor of the store, being one of the hardest workers in the matter of assistance. Mr. Schuyler, who had been sent for was present when death came.
The deceased had not been subject to fits of any kind, and many are of the impression that something he had been eating, or the heat was the immediate cause of his sudden death. He was about fifty years of age, and leaves a wife but no children. He was a genial gentleman and had many friends who will be pained to hear of his sudden taking off.
The funeral cortege will start from Williamsport Thursday morning on the 8:20 P & E Train for Tubortville, where the services will be held in the church on the arrival of the train.
