Nicholas Ackley was an early settler of East Haddam, then called "Haddam, east of the great river"] and lived in the area that is now Maple Street. His farm is still in possession of his descendants, spanning over 300 years being in the same family. He died on 29 April 1695 in "Haddam" [became East Haddam in 1734 when the town was incorporated] and was interred
in the Old Cove Burying Ground which was about three miles from his home. Any record of a fieldstone has not been found.

The heirs of Nicholas Ackley signed an agreement to divide the estate [dated 1695 with the month and day torn off]: Miriam Ackley, his widow; sons Thomas Ackley, John Ackley, Samuel Ackley, James Ackley and daughters Hannah Purple, Sarah Spencer, Mary Crippen, Lydia Robinson and John Chapman with Abel Shailer as witnesses.
