Margret Pearl Clarinda Bussear was born in Montpelier, Blackford County, Indiana in 1907. When she was two years old, her family moved to Freesoil, Michigan. The family lived 1 mile north of town so she and her brothers and sisters had to walk to school every day. Her older sister, Bessie, had found work as a maid and cook in one of the lumber baron mansions in Manistee, Michigan. When Margret was about 16 she also went to work as a maid/cook in Manistee. In 1924 she married Preston Wilder. Her son, George Leroy was born on July 9, 1925. They then had a daughter who they named Dorothy Mae who was born on December 9, 1927. Margret later divorced her husband. She was a cook all of her life and I can personally say that her cooking was excellent! She had several restaurants during her lifetime. She also worked as a cook and housemother for a sorority at UCLA for several years. I can remember eating at her place in Bear Lake, Michigan. Like her sister, her fried chicken, mashed potatoes and gravy, coleslaw, baking powder biscuits, homemade ice cream with apple pie was something that I still remember today!
