Joe Lewis Rites to Be Held Here

Funeral services for Joe Lewis Sr., 91, of 1328 Milam St., will be at 9:30 a.m. Friday at Holy Trinity Catholic Church with Msgr. John C. Vandegaer officiating.

Mr. Lewis died at 5:15 a.m. Wednesday at P&S Hospital after a long illness.

He was a native of Salaparuta, Italy, and had lived in Shreveport for 50 years. He was a retired merchant. He was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church and the Progressive Men's Club.

Survivors are three daughters, Mrs. Rose Papa and Mrs. Lena Fontana., both of Shreveport, and Mrs. Lillie Reynolds of San Diego, Calif.; three sons, Frank Lewis of Shreveport, Tony Lewis of Monroe, and Joe Lewis, Jr. of Columbus, Miss.; a sister, Mrs. Mary Cascio of Shreveport; 17 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Vince Taglavore, Joe Roppolo, C. P. Brocato, Nick Pizzolato, Bert Purgatorio, Sam Cangelosi.

Burial will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery under the direction of Wellman's Funeral Home.

His birth name is Stanislao D'Aloisio. He is the son of Leonardo D'Aloisio and Rosa Milazzo D'Aloisio. His name was changed in America by his employers to Joe Lewis. According to family record he was the first one of his family to come to America from Sicily. He later sent money for his family to join him.
