James Hale Bewley was born about 1853 in Anderson, SC. He died 21 Nov 1907 in Birmingham, AL. He was the first child born to William Carter Bewley and Catharine Douglas Hale.

James Hale Bewley and Nancy Jane ("Jennie") McCord were married 02 Dec 1873 in Abbeville. From the 11 Dec 1873 issue of the Anderson Intelligencer: "At the residence of the bride's grandfather, Mr. John Davis, of Abbeville, on the 2nd inst., by the Rev. W. T. Capers, Mr. James H. Bewley of Anderson C.H. and Miss Jennie McCord of Abbeville."

Jennie McCord was born about 1853 in Abbeville. Her parents were William L. McCord and Frances Elizabeth Davis, both of Abbeville. From a 15 Aug 1972 letter written by Dr. Robert William Webb (one of James Bewley's and Jennie McCord's grandsons): "My grandmother, Jennie McCord, made 2 short visits at our home in Anderson, S. C., about 1905-8, when I was a small boy 10-13 years of age. I remember her well. She was a very large woman, … dark brown hair and eyes, a youthful and pretty face, a nice smile with no traces at that time of either gray hair or wrinkles."

James Hale Bewley and Jennie McCord had five children who lived to adulthood. Their first child, Kate Bewley, was born 28 Jun 1875 in Anderson. She was married to William Miles Webb on 11 Apr 1894 in the First Baptist Church in Anderson (see other article in this publication about William Miles Webb's family). Kate died 14 Mar 1931 in Anderson.

James Hale Bewley's and Jennie McCord's second child was named Seppie Anna Bewley. She was born 28 Dec 1877 in Anderson, and she died 13 Jun 1960 in Birmingham, AL. She was first married to John Lee Steenhuis (see other article in this publication about John Lee Steenhuis' family).

James Hale Bewley's and Jennie McCord's third child was named William Charles ("Bill") Bewley. He was born 27 May 1883 in Anderson, and he died 20 Feb 1955 in Bibb County, GA. He married Francis Vernon ("Fanny") Hammond on 23 Feb 1910 in Augusta, GA (see other article in this publication about William Charles Bewley's family).

James Hale Bewley's and Jennie McCord's fourth child was named Ida Elizabeth ("Ida") Bewley. She was born about 1886 in Anderson, and she died about 1940 in Morristown, TN. She married Edward Yard ("Ed") Hill of Morristown about 1904. He was born in Sep 1882 in Trenton, NJ, and he died in Dade County, FL in 1926. Ed Hill's parents were Dr. Judson Sudburough Hill and Lura E. Yard, both from Trenton, NJ. Dr. Hill was a Methodist minister who was the founder of the Morristown Normal and Industrial College in 1881. He was the first president of that school, a position he held for fifty years until his death in 1931. Detailed information about that school and Dr. Hill's role in its founding and development can be found in the publication Tennessee, The Volunteer State, 1769-1923, Vol. 4.

In the 1900 census listing for Pineville, KY, Ida Bewley was recorded as a 14-year-old, student, attending school, and living in the household of her older sister, Seppie and her husband, Lee Steenhuis, and their two small children at that time. Jim Lee Steenhuis was shown as a 2-year-old and Katie Steenhuis was shown as a 7-month-old. It is speculated that at least part of the reason Ida was there was to help her older sister, Seppie, care for her two young children. Ida's parents, James and Jennie, were then living in Augusta, Georgia with their sons, William Charles ("Bill") Bewley (17) and Joseph Hale ("Joe") Bewley (10).

From that 15 Aug 1972 letter written by Dr. Robert William Webb (one of Ida Bewley's nephews): "About 1903-4, my father, mother, two younger brothers (Jeff and Julian) and I visited Aunt Seppie and Uncle Lee Steenhuis in their home at a small, mountainous, and mining town, Pineville, KY! I shall never forget that trip, as it was so cold up there, so much snow which was a novelty to us and it was the farthest away from home that I had ever been! My mother's youngest sister, Ida Bewley, married Ed Y. Hill, Jr., a promising young newspaper man from Morristown, Tenn., in Aunt Seppie's and Uncle Lee's home while we were there! Aunt Ida was indeed a pretty and lovely young bride! On our return to SC from that visit in Ky., we made a short visit at Morristown, Tenn., where we met Ed Hill's family and my mother, I think, got to meet some of the Hales … As proof of my mother's high impression and respect for the Hale Family, she named my second younger brother, Julian Hale Webb." Seppie also named one of her children (Pauline Hale Steenhuis) in honor of her Hale ancestry.

In the 1910 census listing for Morristown, Tennessee, Ida was recorded as a 25-year-old, living with her husband and their daughter, Anna B., who was listed as a 5-year-old. The occupation listed for Ed Hill was "Printer – Job Work." In the 1920 census listing for Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Ida E. Hill was recorded as a 33-year-old, living with her husband and their children who were then recorded as Anna B. (14) born in AL, Jane M. (8) born in TN, and Millicent D. (2 5/12) born in VA. The occupation listed for Ed Hill was "Writer – Advg."

In the 1930 census listing for Morristown, TN, Ida was recorded as a 43-year-old head of a household located next door to the household headed by her father in law, Dr. Judson S. Hill. Her husband had apparently died prior to that census activity in Jun 1930. Shown in Ida's household were her children: Anna B. (25) with occupation "Clerk in Bank," Millicent D. (12), Edward Y. (10) born in PA, Fels L. (7) born in GA, Ida B. (4 ½) born in FL, and Judson S. (3 2/12) born in TN. Also in that household were Ida's son-in-law, Pryor Wagner (25) and his wife, Jane M. Wagner (18).

James Hale Bewley's and Jennie McCord's fifth child was named Joseph Hale ("Joe") Bewley. He was born 01 Jan 1890 in Anderson, SC. He died after 1930. He was listed in the 1900 census in Augusta, GA (with name spelled Bewly) along with his older brother, William, and their parents, James and Jennie. On 05 Jun 1917, his WWI registration card was recorded showing his residence in Jacksonville, FL and showing him as single and of medium build, medium height, with grey eyes and brown hair. At that time, he was a railroad clerk with the Georgia Railroad. He was listed in the 1930 census in New York City with wife Norma, aged 40, and daughter Elizabeth, aged 23 months. Joe and Norma were each recorded as having been 31 at the time of their first marriages. Norma was recorded as having been born in Missouri and her parents in Illinois. Elizabeth was recorded as having been born in the District of Columbia. Joe's occupation was recorded as Commercial Agent for the railroad.

From a 31 Aug 1972 letter written by Dr. Robert William Webb (one of Joe Bewley's nephews): "Mr. Joe Bewley is the one member of the family about whim I know the least. He visited our Anderson home briefly in the 1900's, when I was a boy about 10 years of age, but I remember him well to this day. He was tall, attractive, even handsome, dark hair and brown eyes, with a wonderful smile. He worked for many years, I believe, in various railroad offices in the state of Georgia and maybe South Carolina. Many years later, I heard that he had gone to New York State to work in some kind of railroad business. I think that either Aunt Seppie or Uncle Will, sometime and somewhere, told me that he had developed a serious ailment, diabetes or large blood clot, which required amputation of one leg."

Dr. Webb's letter went on: "I have written you an unpardonably long and rambling letter, in an effort to reveal the story, as I know it, on the Bewleys to let you know what FINE people and characters I consider my mother (Kate), Aunt Seppie, Uncle Will, Aunt Ida, and Uncle Joe to have been."

And, from the earlier letter, written 15 Aug 1972 by Dr. Webb: "Now, as to what I know about the immediate Bewley off-springs resulting from the marriage of James H. Bewley and Jennie McCord. They all possessed beautiful dark brown hair and eyes, notable features, and were attractive people indeed."

James Hale Bewley's grave is in Old Silver Brook cemetery in Anderson, South Carolina in the Bewley family plot as recorded in the cemetery records there with interment date 23 Nov 1907. The location of Jenny McCord's grave is not yet known.
