Kathryn Lucille Bozard Sharpe COLUMBIA - Kathryn Lucille Bozard Sharpe died peacefully February 9, 2017, at the age of 94. Kathryn was born April 8, 1922, to the late Eukie and Virginia Popwell Bozard. Kathryn was preceded in death by her husband, Lt. Col. John Henry Sharpe, U.S. Army (Ret.), brother, Jimmy Ray Bozard, son, John Ryan Sharpe, daughter-in-law, Kathy Sharpe, daughter, Barbara Olivia Peterson and son in-law, Jeffery Peterson. Kathryn is survived by brothers, Henry, Andrew and Al Bozard, as well as her beloved grandson, Jason Sharpe. She was a grandmother to one grandson, Jason Sharpe of Tampa, FL, two stepgrandchildren and six stepgreat-grandchildren. In her early years, Kathryn served as a Gray Lady during World War II and was one of George Wallace's secretaries. She served as the mayor of Swansea for three terms, then went onto become president of the S.C. Water Commission under Senator Strom Thurmond. She was a longtime member of Swansea Baptist Church and was active in the community, often volunteering for voting polls and Meals on Wheels. Kathryn was at her happiest spending time with her grandson Jason. She traveled the world to see him, praised his accomplishments to everyone and was his biggest cheerleaders. To know Kathryn was to know Jason. She especially loved that he moved closer to her in last couple of years where she was able to spend more time with him. A service to celebrate Kathryn's life will be held Swansea Baptist Church on Sunday, February 12, 2017, at 2 p.m. with a visitation from 12-2 p.m. She will be buried at a future date in Arlington National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Heart Association or Meals on Wheels. Online condolences may be registered at www.basscares.com.
