Birth year is based on John H. Gwathmey, ed. Historical Register of Virginians in the Revolution (1938), 86:347. He owned a licensed ordinary (aka tavern keeper) in Augusta County, Virginia at least from 1756-1762 (see Augusta County Court Records Order Books V-VII). He married Margaret McNealey about 26 August 1760 in the Province of Pennsylvania (Linn and Egle, Pennsylvania Marriages, 1976, p. 125).

Having served as a sergeant in Captain Thomas Young's Company of the Virginia Militia under Colonel Joseph Crockett's Regiment from 18 September 1779 until 1 December 1780 when he was wounded and discharged at Albemarle Barracks, James Hughes is recognized as an American Patriot (DAR #A059156 and SAR #P-187416).
