David was the son of Isaiah & Phoebe Arnett Salyer and the husband of Flora Katherine Richardson Salyer. The couple moved their family from Jeffersonville, Kentucky to Middletown, Ohio, c. 1917. They were the parents of Robert Bruce, James Polk, Grace, Herbert Benton, Finley Fogg, Ray, Goebel, Atholl C. and Mabel Salyer.

Mr. Salyer earned his living by farming his own land and, while in Kentucky, also operated a stable. After moving to Ohio, he farmed and ran a soft drink stand in Middletown. He passed away, at Good Samaritan Hospital, from the effects of arteriosclerosis, with a duration of twenty-eight years, complicated by an infection and the infirmities of old age.
