Staff Sergeant Joseph Henry Downing Jr was a casualty of the Vietnam War. As a member of the Army, SSG Downing served our country until February 10th, 1968 in Chuong Thien, South Vietnam. He was 37 years old and was married. It was reported that Joseph died from artillery fire. His body was recovered. SSG Downing is on panel 38E, line 067 of the Vietnam Memorial Wall in Washington D.C. He served our country for 18 years.

He was the husband of Mrs Nellie R Downing, 1132 Pierce Street, Washington, NC. SFC Downing was a military man all his life. He enlisted at the age of 17 and loved serving his country.

He served with Headquarters Company, Advisory Team 50, MACV Advisors. MACV.

He was awarded The Combat Infantryman's Badge(CIB), The Bronze Star Medal, The Army Commendation Medal, The Purple Heart Medal for his combat related wounds, The Vietnam Service Medal, The Republic of Vietnam Campaign Service Medal, The National Defense Service Medal and The Army Good Conduct Medal(s).
