Gary L. Adair passed away peacefully Tuesday, January 24, 2017 at home in Monticello, UT. Gary was born in Cedar City, UT October 24, 1935 to Eleanor Hulet and Josiah Hoyt Adair. He was raised in Panaca, NV along with his three sisters and four brothers.
It was in Panaca that he learned to love hunting, fishing and being outdoors. He graduated from Lincoln County High School in 1953.
After graduation, Gary attended Brigham Young University. It was at BYU that he decided to serve a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He was called to serve in the Spanish American Mission and served for two and a half years in Texas, New Mexico and California.
Right after his mission, Gary was drafted into the United States Army. Following Basic Training, he was stationed in Schwabach, Germany and was assigned to be the chaplain’s assistant.
While serving in Germany, he met Beverly Turner, who was teaching for the Department of Defense. They were married in the Swiss Temple on June 18, 1960. At the completion of his military duties, Gary, Bev and their infant son, Jeff, returned to the United States.
Gary finished his schooling at the University of Utah and started his career teaching Spanish in Newport, OR. He returned to school a couple of years later to get his counseling certificate and started his first job as a school counselor at Monticello High School in 1970.
He enjoyed working with the teachers, students, and parents at MHS for 27 years.
Living in Monticello provided many opportunities to enjoy the outdoors. He loved to hunt, fish, backpack, ski, run, bike, boat and shoot. These hobbies allowed for many wonderful family experiences where he taught his children to love spending time together and the beauty of living in Southern Utah.
After retiring from teaching in 1997, Gary and Beverly taught English to university students in Qingdao, China. They treasure the experiences they had in China and the relationships they built with the wonderful Chinese students.
Gary served diligently in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints all his life. He served in many positions but was especially talented in working with the youth and enjoyed his time as scoutmaster, Sunday School teacher and Bishop of the Monticello Fourth Ward.
Gary is survived by his wife, Beverly; children Jeff (Cammy) Adair, Heidi (Curt) Doel, John (Lisa) Adair, Amy (Todd) Westcott; 19 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren who will dearly miss him and the adventures they had together.
