Rita A. Curren, 84, of Albion, NE passed away Sunday, January 29, 2017 at Good Samaritan Society-Albion.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, February 2, 2017 at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Albion with Fr. Mark Tomasiewicz officiating. Burial will follow in the Rose Hill Cemetery, Albion NE. Visitation will be Wednesday from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. at the Levander Funeral Home with a 7:00 p.m. Wake Service. Visitation will continue Thursday morning from 9:00-till service time at the church.

Rita Ann Curren, the daughter of Benedict and Elizabeth (Krzycki) Shotkoski, was born on March 22, 1932 in Genoa, Nebraska. Rita was baptized on April 3, 1932 at the St. Rose of Lima Church in Genoa, NE. She received her elementary education at rural Boone and Nance County Schools. Rita graduated from St. Edward High School in 1949. Rita started working at her parent’s café during high school.

On June 28, 1952 Rita was united in marriage to William D. Curren at the St. Edward Catholic Church in St. Edward, NE. The couple lived in Albion where Rita took care of the books for her husband’s blacksmith business. She also worked at the floral shop for many years. Rita worked various jobs throughout the years, but she especially enjoyed working with the children at the school library and Head Start.

Rita was a member of the St. Michael’s Catholic Church, the Altar Society, and the Christian Women’s Club. She also served as secretary of the Hospital Auxiliary, member and secretary of the American Legion Auxiliary, member and Treasurer of the VFW Auxiliary Post #736. She was also a member of the Cancer Support Group. Rita enjoyed sewing, knitting, and many other crafts. She was very creative and played piano in her younger days. She enjoyed working with flowers and in her garden, and camping and fishing with her husband Bill. Rita hosted many fish fries for him and his friends. She had quite a sense of humor which was enjoyed by many. Neighbors and other elderly friends appreciated her willingness to lend a helping hand.

Rita is survived by her two daughters: Debbie (Paul) Dolan of Indianola, NE; Cindy (Michael) Staub of Carroll, NE; brother Gene Shotkoski of St. Edward, NE; sister Phyllis Roberts of Newman Grove, NE; step-brother Nick Fonda of St. Edward, NE; sister-in-law Dorothy (Paul) Curren Hayhurst of Mesa, AZ; 10 grandchildren: Lisa (Spencer) Neely of Broken Bow, NE: William Dolan of Hastings, NE; Alysa (Troy) Bruns of Wayne, NE; Theresa Dolan of Kearney, NE; Krista Dolan of New Canaan, CT; Nathan (Jessi) Staub of Norfolk, NE; Katie (Jon) Hofer of Kearney, NE; Joshua (Savannah) Staub of Wayne, NE; Magan Dolan of Kearney, NE; and Michaela (Andrew) Mohr of Omaha, NE; 12 great-grandchildren; nieces Sandi Perry and Sheryl Sommerfeld; along with many other nieces and nephews.

Rita was preceded in death by her parents, husband, step-father Ray Fonda, mother-in-law Mira Curren, brother and sister-in-law LeRoy and Kathy Shotkoski, and brother-in-law Joe Roberts.
