Historical figure from The Holy Bible / Hebrew Torah, Judah (Yehuda or Yehudah or Jahud, whose name means "thanksgiving" or "praise") was, according to the Book of Genesis, the fourth son of Jacob and Leah, the founder of the Israelite Tribe of Judah. By extension, he is indirectly eponymous of the Kingdom of Judah, the land of Judea and the word "Jew". According to the narrative in Genesis, Judah with Tamar is the patrilinear ancestor of the Davidic line.

Some of Judah's notable mentions from The Bible (King James Version) include the following:

"And she [Leah] conceived again, and bare a son: and she said, 'Now will I praise the Lord': therefore she called his name Judah; and left bearing" (Genesis 29:35).

"[Jacob's blessing over Judah] 'Judah, thou art he whom thy brethren shall praise: thy hand shall be in the neck of thine enemies; thy father's children shall bow down before thee. Judah is a lion's whelp: from the prey, my son, thou art gone up: he stooped down, he couched as a lion, and as an old lion; who shall rouse him up? The sceptre shall not depart from Judah, nor a lawgiver from between his feet, until Shiloh [the Messiah] come; and unto him shall the gathering of the people be. Binding his foal unto the vine, and his ass's colt unto the choice vine; he washed his garments in wine, and his clothes in the blood of grapes: His eyes shall be red with wine, and his teeth white with milk'" (Gen. 49:8-12).

"And this is the blessing of Judah: and he [Moses] said, 'Hear, Lord, the voice of Judah, and bring him unto his people: let his hands be sufficient for him; and be Thou an help to him from his enemies'" (Deuteronomy 33:7).
